Does the app have the same content as the Hooked on Phonics physical product?
The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read app is based on the proven teaching methods of the Hooked on Phonics books and DVD sets. The 12 Steps in the app are designed for a Kindergarten reading level, whereas the physical product is for Pre-K through Second Grade. In addition, the app covers more sight words and has a library of 36 leveled eBooks that are only available within the app. These eBooks were written to correspond to the sounds and words being taught in each of the lessons, so the eBooks are 100% decodable to children who have completed the lessons. Thus, the eBook library gives children even more practice reading and more opportunities for success, which helps to boost their self confidence and pride as readers.

  • When you’ve found the Hooked on Phonics app you’re looking for, tap INSTALL.
  • Our apps are large so please try to get as close as possible to your wireless access point to insure the fastest and most complete download.

I can't download the Hooked on Phonics app.

  • Make sure you are connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. Our apps are big so they will not download if connected through a cellular network.
  • From your Home screen, touch the Settings icon.
  • Make sure there is a network listed to the right of Wi-Fi. If there is not, find and connect to a Wi-Fi network.

I still can't download the Hooked on Phonics app.

Check to make sure you have enough room on your device for the Hooked on Phonics app. It requires at least 90 MB of free space.

  • From your Home screen, touch the Settings icon.
  • From the Settings menu, touch “General”.
  • To the right of General, touch “Usage”.
  • Below the word “Storage” on the top of your screen, you will see the amount of space available. If it is less than 100 MB, you will need to delete some applications or files to make room for Hooked on Phonics.

I have successfully downloaded the app but there is no sound.

Please be certain that the volume is up and the mute function has not been turned on.

If you’ve been running several apps, there might be a conflict if more than one uses sound as much as our apps do. Please close all open apps (including Hooked on Phonics) and re-launch.

Assuming your sound settings are ok, this might have been a download problem. This happens from time to time because the app is gigantic (sorry… tons of content) and the sound files load last. So, if there is even a slight Wi-Fi interruption during the download, and the sound files don’t finish loading, the sound does not work. To fix it, you’ll have to completely delete the app from the device and re-download it.

If possible, please move as close to your Wi-Fi wireless access point as you can get to get the strongest possible signal before you re-start the download. This usually helps. Don’t worry… anything you purchased is still yours and will be available when you re-install as long as you use the same username.

How do I download an eBook?

  • Download the FREE Unit 1 app.
  • Tap on the Unit 1 eBooks you wish to purchase (Nat Sat, Can Man, Zap!).
  • Confirm your in-app purchase.
  • If you’d like to download an eBook from the Unit 2 bookshelf, please download the Unit 2 app first. This ensures that your child will learn the lessons and sight words necessary to be able to read those eBooks successfully.

5 parent tips to get the most out of Hooked on Phonics for your child

Begin at the beginning. Start your child on Step 1. That’s the only way to be sure your child knows all of the sounds (phonemes) and words he will need to know in order to read. Plus, it gives him a boost of self-confidence by starting on a level that may be a little bit easy for him.

  • Practice makes perfect! Hooked on Phonics is a comprehensive learn-to-read program. It was designed to make kids WANT to play the games, listen to (and sing!) the songs, and read the eBooks multiple times. The more they play it, the more they will learn.
  • Make it work for you. If you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re always on the go. We sometimes get caught up in thinking that if we can’t do something important (like doing a reading app with our children) every day, we shouldn’t do it at all. But Hooked on Phonics was designed with busy families in mind. You’ll be amazed what as little as 15 minutes twice a week can do! Stealing a line from a well-known hair color commercial from the 80s, “And [my child’s] . . .  worth it!”
  • Celebrate success! Your child thrives on praise from you. Encourage your child to read the eBooks aloud to parents, grandparents, friends, family members . . . even your dog! Learning to read is a huge accomplishment. The more your child practices reading aloud, the more fluent he will become. Showing interest in your child’s achievements tells him that reading is important to you and you are proud of her accomplishments.
  • Encourage creativity. The Trophy Room and White Board activities in the app were designed as places for kids to let their creative juices flow! In the Trophy Room, kids customize their own reward. The White Board encourages budding writers to practice spelling words and even writing their own sentences and stories.
